About the Beach Cities, Walkers and Talkers club

The “Beach Cities, Walkers and Talkers Club” began as an outreach of the Beach Cities Health District more than ten years ago and has since then developed into an independent entity with a life of its own, that caters to mature (50+) walkers (aka 'Chronologically experienced citizens').

Camaraderie is waiting at the Hermosa Pier and drives many of us to faithfully show up each Tuesday and Thursday at 8:00 AM sharp, as our dedicated timekeeper Barbara is a stickler for punctuality.

For most of us, our northern strand walk ends with a cup of coffee and pleasant talks at Gabriel’s Café Bonaparte located on the H.B. pier’s Plaza.  The walks vary between 2 and 5 miles depending on one’s abilities.

New people are welcome to join our group of dedicated members by showing up at the end of the Hermosa Beach pier on the designated days. During the year, the club organizes many activities that enrich our lives. For further information browse this site.

Government fitness test for adults

The test involves three basic components: aerobic fitness, muscular strength and flexibility. The test is for people 18 and older who are in good health. It was inspired by scores of baby boomers who kept asking council members whether there was a fitness test available today that was similar to the ones they took as students.

The aerobic component of the tests consists of a one-mile walk or 1.5-mile run. The run is not recommended for those who don't run for at least 20 minutes, three times a week.

Push-ups and half sit-ups make up the strength test. The push-ups are done until failure. The sit-ups are done for one minute.

A stretching exercise called the "sit-and-reach" is used to measure flexibility.

The scores from all four of the fitness tests can be entered online. Other information, such as age, gender, height and weight are also part of the equation.

You won't get a presidential certificate, but the results will then show where you rank among people of the same age. For example, if someone scores in the 75th percentile for push-ups, that means 75 percent of the scores fall below your score.

How far did I walk?

As you know, one of the group most common question we hear is " How far did I walk?"

Over the years, I have made quite a few measurements of our Tuesday and Thursday walks and then relied on my memory for recall.

Unfortunately, after a few weeks I consistently forget the numbers.

So, once and for all or until proven in error, here are the various distances that our Walking group walks:

1) From HB Pier to the MB Wall (End of HB) and back, you would have walked 2.3 miles

2) From HB Pier to MB Pier and back, you would have walked 3.65 miles

3) From HB Pier to the end of MB Pier and back, you would have walked 4 miles

4) From HB Pier to MB 27th Street and back you would have walked 5 miles

All measurements were made using MapSource software.

Regardless of which route we walk, I think that we can all be proud of ourselves of being a member of the Walkers Hall of fame!

Enjoy, Jacques

Guidelines about the posting of our Activities/Events:

Many of our members might have noticed that some of the Walking Club activities are posted on various places on our site and some are not posted at all. It might seems that there is not logic to this phenomenon but actually there are guidelines that govern these postings and here they are:

  1. All the members have to have been invited with the exception that the total amount of guests may be limited (no discrimination)

  2. This site/webmaster must have been asked by the organizer to send email invitations.  This will insure that all members have been invited. Organizers are encouraged to publicize their event in any matter and form that they desire. This rule is in addition to this!

  3. The event organizer(s) must request coverage to this site Webmaster. This will insure that a photographer and reporter will cover the event.

  1. The majority (or about) of the activity participants or the leader's must have been club members.

  2. The reporting of the event must be generated by the organizer(s) or participant's) and emailed to this site for posting.

  3. Guidelines for reporting an activity can be reached by Clicking Here.
